Elk Valley Water Quality Plan Technical Reports

These reports are the result of ongoing research and monitoring of water quality and aquatic health as part of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. They were prepared by professional scientists and represent the knowledge developed since 2014 when the Plan was approved. The reports have been reviewed by the Environmental Monitoring Committee and shared with regulators and the Ktunaxa Nation. These reports are used to inform the ongoing implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan.

Overall, the report findings confirm that the targets established in the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan for selenium and other substances are appropriate and protective of aquatic life. The findings also indicate that concentrations of selenium and other substances are generally trending as expected. The concentrations are not affecting fish populations, but effects on some types of benthic invertebrates (certain types of mayflies) have been observed in specific downstream areas and studies are being undertaken to determine the cause.

Line Creek Operations Local Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (LAEMP) 2017

This report presents the 2017 results of the local aquatic effects monitoring program developed for Teck’s Line Creek Operations. The report presents data and evaluation of potential effects of the West Line Creek Selenium Active Water Treatment Facility on biological productivity and tissue selenium accumulation downstream of the facility.

Greenhills Operations Local Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (LAEMP) 2017

This report presents the 2017 results of the local aquatic effects monitoring program developed for Teck’s Line Creek Operations. The purpose of this program in the first year was to develop a better understanding of a side channel that lies between Greenhills Operations and the Elk River. This is the first report for this program.

Fording River Operations Local Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (LAEMP) 2017

This report presents the 2017 results of the local aquatic effects monitoring program (LAEMP) developed for Teck’s Fording River Operations (FRO). The report presents data and evaluation of current condition and collects baseline data to support future evaluation of changes related to commissioning of an active water treatment facility that will be treating waters from Cataract, Swift, and Kilmarnock creeks at FRO.

Regional Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (RAEMP) Report, 2015-2016

This report presents the results of monitoring undertaken in 2015-2016 to support the evaluation of aquatic ecosystems, per the Regional Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (RAEMP). The objectives of the RAEMP are to assess effects of mine operations, separately and cumulatively, on the aquatic ecosystems within the Elk River watershed, monitor change over time, and assist in understanding whether management and mitigation actions are working as predicted.

Calcite Effects on Fish Spawning and Incubation 2017

This report provides results from further investigations into the relationship between calcite and fish incubation conditions. It presents information collected as part of an ongoing assessment of the relationship between stream calcite and spawning habitat suitability and summarizes the potential use of other field-based assessment methods. This report also provides considerations for the 2018 calcite biological effects monitoring program.

This report provides the results from a 2016 investigation into the relationship between calcite and the incubation conditions for Westslope Cutthroat Trout eggs in the Upper Fording River.

This report provides the results of a phased study that looked at the potential relationship between calcite deposition and benthic invertebrate community structure, periphyton productivity, and the potential effects on fish spawning.

This report was prepared for Teck by Golder Associates Ltd. and relies on testing completed by Nautilus Environmental.

 

Chronic Toxicity Testing of Nitrate and Sulphate 2017

This report interprets and synthesizes two supplemental studies conducted by Teck in the Elk Valley: Nitrate Chronic Toxicity Study and Sulphate Chronic Toxicity Study. These studies were undertaken to better understand toxicity of nitrate and sulphate to biota that are considered to be representative organisms of the Elk Valley, including invertebrates, fish and amphibians.

Regional Water Quality Model 2017 Update

This report provides an overview of the first update to the regional water quality model that was developed for the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. The model is a tool used to simulate how historical, current and future mining activities may affect the concentrations of water quality constituents of interest in the Fording River, the Elk River, tributaries to these rivers located in and around Teck operations, and the Koocanusa Reservoir.

Data Report for the Tributary Evaluation Program (DRAFT)

This report provides an inventory of all tributaries to the Elk and Fording Rivers that are located within management units (MUs) 1, 2, 3, and 4 (as defined by the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. This report evaluates the ecological value of these tributaries to the Elk and Fording Rivers and helps to identify tributaries that play a significant role in supporting the health of the ecosystem as a whole.

Selenium Bioaccumulation Model 2017 Update

The selenium bioaccumulation model was derived for the EVWQP to describe the uptake of aqueous selenium into periphyton and the subsequent trophic transfer to benthic invertebrates, fish, and aquatic-feeding birds. The EVWQP identified elements of the model that required ongoing improvement. This report describes the adjustments to the model and how they were made, the rationale, and recommendations for future updates.

Evaluation of Selenium Sensitivity of Spotted Sandpipers Breeding in the Elk River Watershed of Southeastern British Columbia, 2013-2014 (February 2016)

This report presents the results of field observations undertaken in 2013-2014 of nesting spotted sandpipers in the Elk River watershed. The main objective of the study was to determine if there is an association between sandpiper egg hatchability and selenium concentrations.

A Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) was formed to provide science-based advice for the development of Teck’s Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. Information on the TAC and input provided into the development of the EVWQP is available at: https://elkvalleytac.wordpress.com/

The Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) is established under Environmental Monitoring Act permit 107517 to review monitoring submissions required under the permit. The EMC prepares a public report annually summarizing monitoring activities reviewed by the committee.
