Promoting LGBTQ2S+ Inclusivity at Teck

March 17, 2022

Teck’s site- and business unit-level Inclusion and Diversity Committees provide a focused approach to inclusion activities at our operations and business units.

At Teck, we know that our diversity – the many different and unique things we individually and collectively bring to work each day – contributes to building a stronger workforce and makes us a better company. As such, we work to create an environment that respects and values the diversity of the people and communities around us.

We continue to implement multiple initiatives to strengthen our LGBTQ2S+ inclusion at work. This includes partnering with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion for training sessions across our operations, recognizing the International Pronouns Day and the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and undertaking improvements to make our systems and facilities more inclusive for all employees.

Commitment from Senior Management

Our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion starts with our Board of Directors, who consider diversity in the selection criteria for new board members and senior management team appointments. Since 2015, our Senior Executive Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee has guided the development of our strategy and is focused on taking steps to ensure Teck is a truly equitable, diverse and inclusive workspace. The committee consists of members from our Leadership team across our sites in North America and Chile.

We have seen continued growth in our global employee Pride Network and have site-level and business unit-level Inclusion and Diversity Committees that provide a focused approach to inclusion activities at our operations.

Creating an Inclusive and Respectful Workplace

In 2021, we made significant progress promoting LGBTQ2S+ inclusivity in our workspaces.  One example of this work is the training opportunities in equity, diversity and inclusion provided to employees. Through our partnership with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, we held multiple in-depth training programs for Human Resources employees at Canadian sites on topics ranging from Unconscious Bias, Respect in the workplace and LGBTQ2S+ inclusion.  Additionally, our corporate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team conducted virtual training sessions for employees and supervisors, to raise awareness of LGBTQ2S+ diversity and inclusion specifically. To date, over 800 employees have participated in these interactive training sessions.

In addition to training, we recognized International Pronouns Day and International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia in 2021. We also continued to promote our Gender Inclusive Language Guideline to ensure communications are inclusive and that all individuals are recognized and represented.

We undertake improvements to make our systems and facilities more inclusive for all employees. We have begun installing gender-inclusive washrooms at our corporate office locations and in the upcoming months, employees will have the option to include pronouns in our internal Human Resources information system.

Moving forward, Teck is committed to strengthening and enhancing our work to promote diversity and be a proud corporate ally to our LGBTQ2S+ employees and community members.
