Celebrating Pride at Teck

February 11, 2021

At Teck, we recognize that our diversity—the many different and unique perspectives we bring to work each day—contributes to building a stronger workforce and a better company. Celebrating pride is part of how we continue to build a workplace rooted in a foundation of respect for our differences, irrespective of our sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. In 2020, we launched the 'Our Pride. Our Teck' campaign to celebrate Pride 2020 and further our commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Through this campaign, Teck recognized and celebrated LGBTQ2S+ employees and allies, as well as the pride networks in the communities where we operate. It created an opportunity to hear the stories of LGBTQ2S+ employees, strengthen our sense of community, and contribute to the health and vibrancy of our workplace.

We are committed to taking steps to create a more inclusive Teck for everyone. Teck has a number of initiatives underway to ensure our procedures and practices honour our commitments on diversity and inclusion. A recent example of this work is our ongoing review of all hiring materials in order to ensure our approach to Human Resources reflects non-binary identification.

This year, Teck also started a Pride Network for LGBTQ2S+ employees and allies with a mandate to identify opportunities to strengthen inclusion and diversity at Teck.

“I’m new to Teck, and one of the big reasons I joined is our focus on building an inclusive culture,” said Melissa Douglas, Manager of Software Development, RACE21TM. “It's exciting to work in an environment where we can be our whole selves at work. We can accomplish so much more as a team by bringing together diverse perspectives. Our Pride. Our Teck."

Jackie Scales, Director, Inclusion and Diversity, is proud of everyone who live their lives openly at Teck. “I believe that no one should ever have to choose between a career they love and living their lives with authenticity and integrity. I joined Teck a year and a half ago as an openly gay woman, which speaks to the accepting and positive culture that Teck has. Pride for my wife and our three children is an opportunity to celebrate our family and our community.”

According to Enrique Castro, General Manager for Teck’s Quebrada Blanca Operations, diversity is a prerequisite for the sort of transformational change Teck is trying to achieve. “At Teck Quebrada Blanca, we believe that everyone is unique. As we work towards developing a world-class, modern, and diverse operation at Quebrada Blanca Phase 2, we want to recognize those who are part of our team and part of the LGBTQ2S+ community. Today, more than ever, we need multiple views, perceptions, and opinions that contribute to our transformation into the operation of the future."

Teck’s update of Human Resources procedures and practices to ensure representation of all gender identities and our work to start a Pride Network for LGBTQ2S+ employees and allies are just a few of the ongoing initiatives that serve to attract and support a diverse employee network. Moving forward, Teck is committed to strengthening and enhancing our work to promote diversity and be a corporate ally to our LGBTQ2S+ employees and community members.
