Helping stop the spread of COVID-19 has required a renewed commitment from all of us to the principles of Courageous Safety Leadership.

At Teck, we know ‘safety starts with me’, and that each of us has the responsibility to speak up when it comes to the health and safety of those around us. Employees from across Teck have shared some of the ways they’re taking action to protect their co-workers, families, friends and communities against COVID-19.

Thank you to all of those who are speaking up to help stop the spread.

“I am practising physical distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19 because I know that stopping the spread starts with me.”

Ben Eby, Machinist, Highland Valley Copper; son, brother and husband

A woman in a uniform smiles in an office with medical and office supplies around her.

“I’m speaking up about the importance of diligent hand hygiene at work and at home as part of my role as a First Aid Attendant.”

Aniko Hawthorn, Protective Services Officer, Highland Valley Copper; mother and co-worker

“I am staying informed and practising physical distancing to keep my crew and their families healthy and safe. Stopping the spread. It starts with me.”

Blake Ledoux, Senior Supervisor, Mine Operations, Highland Valley Copper; father, husband and co-worker

Worker in protective gear standing in an industrial facility with machinery and bright lights visible.

“I’m speaking up about the importance of following all preventative measures that can help stop the spread of COVID-19, while also not losing sight of our everyday hazards and tasks.”

Kelsey Riley, Millwright, Highland Valley Copper; son, brother, husband, father and friend

Firefighter in full gear stands beside a Teck Fire/Rescue truck, holding a helmet with the number 13.

“What am I doing to stop the spread? Being prepared. Whether it's training, equipment or PPE, we need to be ready to respond while keeping ourselves safe. It’s important to be cautious but not afraid. Fear causes you to act irrationally; caution allows you to assess hazards and manage risk.”

Gabe Bouliane, Fire Captain, Trail Operations; brother, father, son and firefighter

A worker in a hard hat and safety vest stands in a rocky, outdoor area, holding a tool, smiling.

“I’m practising physical distancing to help stop the spread. By splitting my time working from home and on site, visiting community businesses only during non-peak hours and only when necessary, and washing my hands frequently and thoroughly, I’m helping to keep my co-workers, family and friends healthy.”

Trevor Allegretto, 9705 Safety Chair and Environmental Coordinator, Lead Zinc Smelter, Trail Operations; son, brother, friend and co-worker

A woman sitting outside, playing tug-of-war with two dogs.

“I'm physically distancing by working from home, communicating with my co-workers electronically—with my four-legged co-workers by my side to ease the strain. Stopping the spread. It starts with me!”

Owen Bryan, Heavy Duty Mechanic, Trail Operations; father, husband and co-worker

Smiling child holding a baby next to a person wearing a beanie.

“As a nurse, I practise physical distancing and handwashing to protect myself and others. These practices are so important to help keep vulnerable populations and people with underlying medical conditions from acquiring this illness. Let’s keep up the good work protecting ourselves and others at work and at home.”

Peter Lambert, Heavy Equipment Mechanic Level 6, Red Dog; volunteer firefighter, husband, dad, and friend

“I've committed to change my rotational schedule to a 6x2, after 10 years of being on a 2x1, to reduce travel and comply with my community's "hunker down" social distancing order. This will increase the health and safety of my household, my co-workers and the people in my community.”

Nicole Shellabarger, Sr. Environmental Technician Level 5, Red Dog; Iñupiaq, EMT, seamstress, wife and best friend

At home, I spend more time outdoors to make social and physical distancing feel natural. In my community, I lecture family and friends about the potential impact of not following proper guidelines and how that puts themselves and others at risk.”

Tristen Pattee, Environmental Technician, Red Dog; Ivisaapaat community member, small business owner, and subsistence provider

Worker in a blue uniform holding an envelope, standing next to safety gear and office equipment.
