On October 14-15, Teck hosted our first virtual Teck Sustainability Conference, which included a lineup of 56 diverse internal and external speakers based in 41 remote locations.
More than 250 participants joined from sites, offices and home offices across the globe to watch the live interactive broadcast, in support of furthering our understanding of best practices in responsible resource development as we move into the implementation of our updated sustainability strategy.
The event featured a series of panels which provided the opportunity to dive into a broad spectrum of topics including global trends, climate change, communities, health and safety, and new technology.

To maximize the experience of the virtual format and involve participants, sessions utilized web-based Q&A platform Pigeonhole, and the agenda featured health and wellness breaks and the sharing of photos that reflected the range of participants remote work locations.
Congratulations to the Sustainability Conference Planning Team and Teck Digital Systems for producing an impressive and engaging event.

Through Teck’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund, $15,000 was donated to the Greatest Need Fund at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) Health Foundation. This funding will be used to secure priority medical equipment to enhance patient safety at KBRH during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Pictured here: Carol Vanelli Worosz, Community Engagement Leader, Trail Operations (left), presents the donation to Lisa Pasin, Director of Development, KBRH Health Foundation.
Employees and contractors adhere to all COVID-19 protocols in place at Red Dog Operations, including physical distancing and wearing a KN95 mask, while attending Introduction to Courageous Safety Leadership. Teck has implemented extensive preventative measures across our offices and operations in order to safeguard the health of our people while continuing to operate safely and responsibly and maintain employment and economic activity to the extent possible. The City of Fernie recognized Teck for a donation of personal protective equipment (PPE), including 150 N95 masks which they had previously been unable to source elsewhere. Luc Coultry, Safety & Loss Prevention Coordinator, worked closely with Fernie Fire Rescue to facilitate the donation, which will be shared between operations crews and Fernie Fire Rescue. Meet five-year-old Rhys (pronounced “Rise”) Sarkany, pictured here with his parents Dan and Kelly at Fording River Operations in September 2020. The family made a special visit to the operation to see the 10 shovel, which was recently renamed Rhys in honour of the incredible strength of this little boy from Elkford who was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2020. The name was chosen as part of a naming contest for 10 shovel, with the winning submission coming from Ben Brewer, Maintenance Heavy Duty Mechanic, Fording River Operations.
Rhys began his eight-month intensive treatment at BC Children’s Hospital in January 2020 with his parents by his side. The treatment journey will take three years, but with a loving family and supportive community, Rhys will fight this battle with all the strength of the 10 shovel!
Teck employee and Lead, Occupational Hygienist Dan Sarkany is based in our Sparwood office.

“How fitting and what an honour it is for him to have the biggest shovel in the world named after him. And what a tribute Teck has bestowed on all cancer patients to have chosen the name “Rhys” for arguably the strongest machine in the world; reminding everyone that all those who battle cancer must rise up to their challenges every day with all the strength in the world. It’s our hope that this is an inspiration for all others to do the same for whatever challenges they may face. Thank you.”- The Sarkany Family
Every year, volunteers from the mining community work together through Mining for Miracles to help improve the quality of healthcare for children in B.C. just like Rhys. Through its support of the construction of facilities and acquisition of specialized medical equipment at the hospital, Mining for Miracles is helping to keep BC Children's Hospital at the forefront of pediatric care excellence. Since 1988, Mining for Miracles has raised more than $33 million in areas of critical need at the BC Children’s Hospital. Learn more about Mining for Miracles at miningformiracles.ca.
Nurlan Bakanov, Co-op Student, Fording River Operations, captured a remarkable photo of the solar system over the Elk Valley in July. Pictured here: Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) in the night sky above Greenhills Operations.
In early June, more than 120 people participated in an emotional virtual meeting to say farewell to Chris Dechert, Vice President, South America, after a very successful career at Teck and more than 30 years in the mining industry.
The event took place virtually, and participants took the opportunity to recognize and thank Chris for his leadership in many areas, including his commitment to improving health and safety, production and cost performance across our Chilean operations, and his work as a champion of inclusion and diversity, communities, environment and mentorship.

Chris began his phased retirement on June 15, relocating back to Canada, where he continued to provide support to Base Metals prior to his full retirement in September 2020.
