Working Together to Help During a Crisis

February 25, 2016

When word came from the Northwest Arctic Borough early the morning of December 5, 2014, that the Kivalina general store was on fire, the Red Dog Mine team was quick to respond, sending a team of firefighters to assist. Following the fire, with Kivalina’s only source of retail food and goods out of commission, the community urgently needed supplies, especially for young children. Working together, a number of communities and organizations including Red Dog Mine, the Borough, the nearby community of Noatak, NANA, Point Hope and Maniilaq, responded to meet those needs, donating food, urgently needed supplies, transportation and freight, and assistance in setting up a temporary store.
